Why Is March Madness Called “March Madness?”

The March Madness tournament is famous for its upsets; it’s not uncommon for low-seed teams from smaller schools to take down highly-touted teams from college basketball powerhouses. For this reason, sportscaster Brent Musburger used the phrase “March Madness” during a 1982 broadcast of the tournament. While this moment made the phrase synonymous with college basketball, it actually has origins in high school basketball; “March Madness” was originally used by a high school basketball official in 1939.

When Does March Madness Start and End?

This year, the March Madness tournament officially starts with the First Four games, which take place on March 18th and 19th. The Final Four starts on April 5th in San Antonio, Texas, and the championship game is slated for April 7th.
